Likened to a top military college, Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas has been in the training business for more than a half-century, providing instruction in a diverse array of Air Force specialties. First opened as an active Army Air Corps base in 1941, it has developed into one of the largest training centers in the Air Education and Training Command.

The base was named for the late Sen. Morris E. Sheppard, former chairman of the Senate Military Affairs Committee. Officers, airmen and noncommissioned officers study basic and advanced fields ranging from pharmacy to power production, aircraft maintenance and data systems. Five miles north of Wichita Falls. The Wichita Falls School District runs an elementary school on base, with other schools in City View, Burkburnett and Wichita County. The 318-bed Sheppard Hospital handles all health-care needs.

Base recreational opportunities include: pools; golf; firing range; bowling; library; clubs; gyms; fitness center; auto, crafts hobby shops; saddle club; theater; youth and community centers and various outdoor activities. Sheppard AFB is about 100 miles northwest of the Dallas Metroplex.
