The satellite network of the U.S. military is vast and complex. When a new control and operation center was needed in 1979, Schriever Air Force Base near Colorado Springs was created. The mission the base carries out is providing command and control for Department of Defense operational military satellites, and operation and management of the worldwide Air Force Satellite Control Network. The wing controls satellite operations centers at Schriever as well as remote tracking stations and other command and control facilities around the world. These facilities monitor satellites during launch, put the satellites in proper orbit, operate them while in orbit, and identify and correct satellite anomalies.

Housing and commissary services are provided at Peterson Air Force Base, which is 10 miles away. Either the local community or Peterson AFB provides almost all services and amenities required by Schriever personnel. Healthcare is provided by a medical clinic at Schriever. The Peterson Clinic provides more comprehensive care but does not have surgical specialists, orthopedic or emergency care. This kind of care can be found at Fort Carson, on the southwest side of Colorado Springs, and the Air Force Academy, northwest of Colorado Springs. In addition, the Colorado Springs community has both highly skilled medical professionals and facilities. Schriever has some recreation activities, such as a softball field, fitness centers, tennis court, racquetball court, aerobics room and basketball courts.
