Sitting at the base of the Huachuca Mountains in Arizona, Fort Huachuca is a product of the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s. The fort originally was built in 1877 to protect settlers and travel routes.
Huachuca is adjacent to the growing city of Sierra Vista. The original Fort Huachuca cantonment was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977. The base now covers 73,272 acres. Housing features units for family and unaccompanied personnel. Families receive support from numerous community-minded organizations on base. Three schools on the base work closely with the local school district.
"Thunder Mountain" is the nickname of choice among locals for the region, as depending on the time of the year, dark clouds can cascade down the mountainside while lightning, thunderclaps and water fill the air in an awesome spectacle. These storms are rare, however, as residents enjoy some of the mildest and best weather in Arizona. Only a 90-minute drive from Tucson and the Mexican border, Fort Huachuca remains one of the most outstanding major installations in the Southwest.
