With an eastern skyline dominated by Mount Ranier and situated on prairie cut from the glacier-carved Nisqually Plain, Fort Lewis is a massive 87,000-acre training installation for nearly 27,400 Army soldiers. Born out of a World War I need, Fort Lewis dates from 1917 and was named in honor of Capt. Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804.
The Clover Park School District runs five elementary schools on post, with off-post schools in surrounding counties. A primary-care clinic and the Madigan Army Medical Center provide health care.
The area is known for its outdoor opportunities, from the mountains to the waters of the Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. Camping, hiking and water activities are a way of life in Washington state, which combined with Tacoma, Olympia and Seattle offer almost-endless cultural opportunities. On-base recreation includes: clubs; boat landing on American Lake; golf; roller skating; bowling; Northwest Adventure Center; pool; gyms; hunting; fishing, and boat rentals.
