Just as Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains protect McChord Air Force Base, the new C-17 Globemaster III guards the base's standing as one of the top Air Mobility Command installations in the Air Force. McChord continues to provide airlift support and combat readiness, primarily through the 62nd Airlift Wing.

Ten miles southwest of Tacoma, Wash., the base honors Col. William C. McChord of the Army Air Corps Training and Operations Division, who was killed in a plane crash in 1937. The base's proximity to Alaska and the Pacific Theater make it a vital part of the nation's defense. Housing features beautiful historic brick quarters, individual houses on tree-lined streets and duplexes with private driveways and back yards. A health-care clinic is on base, though major medical problems are taken to Fort Lewis.

The mild weather prompts outdoor activities on Puget Sound or in the nearby Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges. In July, the average high is 74 degrees and the average low is 54 degrees. Annual rainfall is high but residents become accustomed to carrying rain gear. Base recreation includes: bowling; golf; stables; clubs; fitness center; pool; arts and crafts, wood, and auto hobby shops.
