In the heart of the Virginia military community, and named after a famous aviation pioneer, Langley Air Force Base operates one of the largest fighter bases in the Air Combat Command. Originally the Army's Aviation Experimental Station and Proving Grounds, the base was once home to many who played prominent parts in aerospace history. Eddy Rickenbacker, Raul Lufberry, Douglas Campbell and Frank Luke Jr., known as the "Arizona Balloon Buster," are among the most famous alumni.
Named in honor of American aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley, the Aviation Experimental Station and Proving Ground in Hampton, Va., became Langley Field in 1917. The 1st Fighter Wing, the base's main unit, maintains its mission to "work as a team to be ready to deploy, deter, win." The wing is equipped with about 54 advanced "multistage improvement program" F-15 Eagles. F-15 crews proudly recite their plane's record of air superiority - no F-15 has ever been downed by air-to-air combat since the plane was first deployed in 1976. During the Gulf War, for example, F-15s proved their superior combat capability with a 26-0 record in air-to-air combat. Air Combat Command, based at Langley, organizes, trains, equips and maintains combat-ready forces for rapid deployment and employment while ensuring strategic air defense forces are ready to meet the challenges of peacetime air sovereignty and wartime defense. Langley is in the city of Hampton, near Newport News. The York County School District runs an elementary school on base, with other schools in the same county. The 50-bed 1st Fighter Wing Hospital attends to medical needs.
The 1st Service Squadron offers a great many base recreational services, including: fitness/sports center; all-purpose courts; softball; tennis; pools; golf; bowling; marina; stables; arts and crafts; auto, wood shops; aero club; youth centers; and theater. . Recreation options off base include Virginia Beach's seven major city parks, five community recreation parks and 161 neighborhood parks. There are also three federal wildlife refuges. Langley is in the city of Hampton, next to Norfolk and about a 1-1/2 hour drive from Richmond.
