Welcome to USCG Base Portsmouth
Installation Info: Zip Code: 23703, Area Code: 757
The Coast Guard's Integrated Support Command of Portsmouth, Va., is seated on a spot several armies have fought over in different wars. During the American Revolution, Portsmouth was occupied by both British and American troops. During the Civil War, it was held by Union forces as well as Confederates, who burned the shipyard when they had to abandon it. It was at Portsmouth that a steamship named the Merrimack was covered with iron plates by Confederate forces. The Merrimack fought the Union ironclad Monitor in a famous standoff at Hampton Roads in 1862.
The Command's mission is to support Coast Guard units in the area through administration, logistics and engineering services. A number of Coast Guard cutters, which perform search and rescue, law enforcement and navigational aid maintenance services, are based with the command.
Outpatient medical care is provided by an on-base medical clinic. For more comprehensive care, there is the hospital at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. There is a gym, racquetball courts, weight room, softball field, soccer/football field and club on base.
