Fort Jackson is the Army's largest basic training installation with a tradition of excellence dating from 1917, when the fort was established in the early days of World War I.
Incorporated in South Carolina's capital of Columbia, the fort was named in honor of Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson, a South Carolina native and the seventh president of the United States. First known as the Sixth National Cantonmen. The DOD runs three elementary schools on post, with off-post schools in Richland School Districts 1 and 2. The 60-bed Moncrief Army Community Hospital provides personnel with health care, along with two primary-care clinics.
The Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Fort Jackson is very active, providing many family, community, support and recreation services. Sports and recreational opportunities on base include softball fields, youth sports park, gyms, health club, lakes for fishing and water sports, community center and tennis.
