The mission of the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base is "to maintain highly trained, well-equipped and motivated Guard and Reserve forces in order to provide daily peacetime contributory support, augmentation and wartime mobilization of the active armed forces." The facility, in operation since 1943, played an integral role during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Gulf War supporting military mission around the world through the training of active-duty and reserve personnel. The base was designated a Joint Reserve Base in 1994 to reflect its role as a joint reserve training center. The Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Pennsylvania National Guard join the Navy at this base on 1,100 acres in Horsham, Pa., 30 miles north of Philadelphia.

In addition, a variety of recreational opportunities are available including bowling, auto hobby center, gyms, pools and camping. Commissary services and additional housing are available at Fort Dix, N.J., which is about 45 miles to the east. Opportunities to explore the past and present exist only minutes away. Trace the history of Montgomery County and our country through local historic homes and sites such as Valley Forge National Historic Park. Philadelphia also is full of historical site, such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the U.S. Mint. Philadelphia also has teams in all the major professional sports. Other activities in the region include Elmwood Park Zoo or the Berman Museum of Art. Golf, fishing, skiing, and camping, and other recreational activities are plentiful.
