The only active Army installation of the South Plains forts built during the Indian Wars, Fort Sill is a national historic landmark and "home of the Field Artillery for the free world," featuring the U.S. Army Field Artillery School.

Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan, who led campaigns during the Civil War and Indian Wars, staked out the Fort Sill site in 1869. He later named the installation in honor of his West Point classmate and friend, Brig. Gen. Joshua H. Sill, who was killed during the Civil War. The base is near Lawton, 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City and 50 miles north of Wichita Falls, Tex. The Lawton School District runs elementary schools on post, with off-post choices. Reynolds Army community hospital provides health care.

Soldiers should be aware that Oklahoma has severe weather in the spring, with strong southerly winds producing severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and extremely hot temperatures in the summer. Recreational opportunities on base include: golf courses and miniature golf, fitness centers, youth programs, tennis courts, outdoor recreation, pools, Lake Elmber Thomas Recreation area, beach, water slides, boating and fishing.
