Located on the swampland of North Carolina, New River Marine Corps Air Station is one of three Marine bases occupying the state's eastern coast. The base provides support for its resident units MAG 26 & 29, H&HS and MWSS-272, which provides logistical support for both MAGs.

The base resides in an area that developed from its agricultural, timber, and fishing industries. Those relocating to North Carolina for the first time must file a personal income tax return with the state. All school-age children who live in base housing are eligible to attend the Camp Lejeune Dependents School. Coastal Carolina Community College is also close by. The Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune provides medical care for New River residents, as does the Navy Primary Clinic in Jacksonville.
