On the sandy shores where the forests of North Carolina meet the sea, Marines are learning new ways to fight wars. As one of the premier training bases run by the Marine Corps, Marines, allies, and other branches of the military train for the new challenges facing the Marine Corps. Besides the beautiful terrain surrounding the base, North Carolina is also known for the hospitality of its residents and the collage of colors in the trees every fall. Covering about 246 miles, 14 of which are beachfront. It is one of the largest Marine bases in the world.

The nearest town is Jacksonville, N.C. The base has several childcare programs. The Department of Defense runs several elementary schools on the base grounds, one middle and one high school. MWR offers after school programs and childcare is available on base. The base has a 206-bed hospital that provides a number of services and is under the Tricare System. The hospital has limited emergency capabilities. Any life-threatening illnesses or emergencies should be taken to the Onslow Memorial Hospital, 10 miles away.

Recreation options on base include a library, stables, bowling lanes, camping grounds, hobby shops, picnic area and Onslow Beach for relaxation under the sun.
