Welcome to Fort Leonard Wood

Click Here to Visit the State WebsiteInstallation Info: Zip Code: 65473, Area Code: 573, DSN: 581

Covering 63,000 acres in the beautiful Ozarks of south-central Missouri, Fort Leonard Wood is the home of the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center. The Engineer, Chemical and Military Police schools reside on the base and provide U.S. and foreign soldiers with world-class training. Springfield, Mo., is about an hour drive to the west and St. Louis is a two-hour drive to the east.

The fort's history dates from 1940 and preparation for World War II when an Army training camp was established to toughen soldiers for the battlefields of Europe. The encampment was named for a prominent Army surgeon, Maj. General Leonard Wood, a colorful figure who fought in the Indian Wars, preceded Theodore Roosevelt as the first commander of the "Rough Riders" in Cuba, and made a losing bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Child care and home care are available, with health care provided by four primary care clinics and the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital.

Recreational opportunities feature many youth services and a club system, in addition to sports, fitness, indoor facilities and an outdoor recreation center.
