Pope Air Force Base has played a leading role in the development of U.S. airpower. Missions at Pope range from providing airlift and close air support to U.S. armed forces to humanitarian missions flown all over the world. In Fayetteville, N.C., on the north end of Fort Bragg, Pope AFB is home to the 43d Airlift Wing. Officially established by the War Department in 1919, Pope AFB ranks among the oldest installations in the Air Force. It is named after 1st Lt. Harley Halbert Pope, who was killed on Jan. 7, 1919, when the JN-4 Jenny he was flying with Sgt. Walter W. Fleming crashed into the Cape Fear River near Fayetteville.

The elementary school on base is run by the Cumberland County school system. The Cumberland, Harnett and Hoke county school systems run off-base schools. Health and dental care are provided by the clinic. All other care is provided at the Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg.

Recreation at Pope includes a fitness center; golf course; tennis courts; bowling; intramural sports; picnic areas; equipment rental; auto hobby shop; seasonal activities; and youth centers. North Carolina's capital, Raleigh, is about 65 miles away.
